IIT Madras won the General Championship (GC) for Men at the
XXXIX Inter-IIT Sports Meet held from December 10 to 19 of
2003, in IIT Bombay, Mumbai! IIT Delhi won the General
Championship (GC) for Women. The hosts, IIT Bombay were
runners-up in both Men and Women's categories.
The Inter-IIT Aquatics Meet was held earlier from October 6 to 9.
The Inter-IIT Sports Meet held annually in December is the most eagerly awaited event that brings together some of the best sportsmen and sportswomen of the IITs. The Men's and Women's teams with the best performance in the Inter-IIT Sports Meet and the Inter-IIT Aquatics Meet (held annually in October) are given a GC for Men and a GC for Women.
IIT Madras won Gold in Atheletics, Badmintion, Swimming, and Hockey, Silver in Basketball, Cricket, Football, Table Tennis, Tennis, and Water Polo, and Bronze in Volleyball. IIT Bombay were the runners up with Gold in Cricket, Table Tennis (men and women), Tennis, Weight Lifting, Athletics (5000m and 15000m), and Shot Putt (women). The Best Athlete Award and Mr. Inter-IIT were won by V M Biju, Sports Secretary, IIT Madras.

IIT Madras won the GC (Men) 15 out of 37 times including a record 11 consecutive times between 1970 and 1980. IIT Kaharagpur won 12 times followed by IIT Bombay with 9 and IIT Delhi with 2 GCs.
The last Inter-IIT Sports Meet was hosted by IIT Delhi and the GC was won by the hosts. The next Inter-IIT Sports Meet will be held at IIT Madras in 2004.
