IIT Madras Technopark will create and manage a state-of-art facility on the 6.59 acres of land transferred by Govt. of Tamil Nadu at Taramani to house commercial/start-up/venture companies which are engaged in R & D activities in close association with/in-line with the research interests of faculty, students and researchers of IIT Madras. The XLI Inter-IIT Sports Meet was held at IIT Roorkee from December 12-18, 2005. IIT Madras came third in the General Championship (GC) for Men and the GC for Women. IIT Kharagpur won the GC for Men and IIT Roorkee won the GC for Women. » Report |

IITM Alumnus, H.J Kamath (1979 BTEE), has been appointed as Director & CEO of Macmet Technologies. Kamath received a B.Tech in Electronics from IIT Madras (1979) and an MBA from IIM Kolkata. He began his career at CMC in 1979. He subsequently joined Computer Point and then started his own IT consultancy company in 1988. He joined Macmet India in 1994 and has been instrumental in giving direction to its Simulation Systems Division. |

IIT Bombay Alumnus, Victor Menezes (1970 BTEE), retired Sr. Vice Chairman of Citigroup, pledges USD 3 million to build Convention Center to be inaugurated during Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2007-2008. IIT Bombay and IIT Bombay Heritage Fund (IITBHF) announced a generous gift of USD 1.5 million, the first part of the pledge. Victor is also co-Chairman of IITBHF. IIT Bombay was established in 1958 (IIT Madras was established in 1959). |

IITM Alumnus, Tushar Mehta (1968 BTMT) passed away in Chennai on Sept. 27 following a cardiac arrest. He was 58 years old. Tushar was a trustee of Mehta Jewellery, the President of Gold Club of Chennai, and the Honorary Consul of Czech Republic in Chennai. He was also a prominent Rotarian and a well-known cricket commentator on AIR. He leaves behind his father Surendra Mehta, his younger brother Abhay Mehta, uncle Naresh Mehta, wife Vaidehi, and sons Tuhin and Rohan. more » |

IITM Alumnus, Joseph (Joe) Asirvatham (1968 BTME) passed away in Chennai on Sept. 13 following a massive cardiac arrest. He was 59 years old. After an early career in drying technology in Mumbai and Chennai, Joe settled down in ITCOT where he was the Principal Consultant. He is survived by his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and son. more » |

A 3-member technical committee was formed earlier this month to review the status of the seven engineering colleges shortlisted (by the SK Joshi Committee) for the IIT status. This committee has now recommended to the HRD ministry that IT-BHU (one of the seven shortlisted) be upgraded to IIT status.

IITM Distinguished Alumnus - Kris Gopalakrishnan (1977 MSCP, 1979 MTCS), Deputy Managing Director & COO, Infosys, and IITM Alumnus and Professor - V.G Idichandy (1979 MSAM, 1987 PHOE), Dean of Students, IIT Madras, visited the US East Coast from October 23-27 to meet with alumni. Kris and Idichandy visited the cities of Washington DC, Atlanta, and Boston on October 23, 24, and 25 respectively. Idichandy visited New York on October 27. The primary focus of these events was the IITM Growth Fund. |

Boston Chapter of IITMAANA (Gajendra Circle of Friends) organized a summer/fall picnic on October 1st, 2005. The picnic was held at the scenic Walden Pond State Reservation in Concord, Massachusetts. Around 50 alumni attended the picnic. The new alumni were welcome into the organization and introduced to the various activities of the chapter. |

IIT Madras won the overall Aquatic Championship for Men at the XLI Inter-IIT Aquatic Meet held from October 1 to 4 of 2005, at IIT Roorkee. The main Inter-IIT Sports Meet will be held in December, again at IIT Roorkee. |

IIT Madras Director, Prof. M.S Ananth, is part of a six-member task force constituted by PM Manmohan Singh to examine various aspects of global trends in stategic affairs. The task force, chaired by K Subrahmanyam and serviced by the National Security Council Secretariat, is expected to submit its report in six months. |

IITM Alumni, Badri Seshadri (1991 BTME) and K Satyanarayana (1990 MSCP) are the directors of Tamil publishing house - Kizhakku Pathippagam (New Horizon Media) - launched in February of 2004. The company was recently featured in Business Line. Badri received a B.Tech in Mechanical Engg. from IIT Madras (1991) and a Ph.D from Cornell University (1996). Satya received his an MSc in Physics from IIT Madras (1990) and went to Cornell University to pursue a PhD. Badri and Satya are also the co-founders of CricInfo - incorporated in 1996. |

Heavy rains lashed Chennai on Thursday leading to cancellation of classes and exams on campus. The water level reached waist height at Tharamni (tarams) gate! The campus roads were blocked (not flooded, thanks to the good drainage in IIT) as trees fell down - the roads to Saraswathi, Tapti, and Krishna hostels were blocked. Although, rains were predicted for the next 48 hours, it was a sunny Friday, and the Distignuished Alumnus Awards function went ahead as planned. |

IITM Alumnus & Professor, R Krishnakumar (1978 BTME, 1990 PHME), and K.R Balakrishnan, a paediatric cardiologist, published a paper in the British Medical Journal. Their research has found that a mildly blocked coronary artery with small deposits of plaque could rupture it and result in sudden heart attacks leading to death. Krishnakumar received his B.Tech (1978) and PhD (1990) from IITM and is presently a professor in the Dept. of Mechanical Engg. |

IITM students, A.V Varun (VII Sem DDAE) and Arun Manohar (V Sem BTAE), devised an algorithm to detect flex action of bowlers (in cricket). Christened Xiva, it was one of 8 entries in the GE sponsored 'industry defined problems' contest at Shaastra 2005, IITM's technical festival. The students won a cash prize of Rs.20,000 and internships with GE. They also plan to submit a proposal to BCCI. |

Midas is test marketing a new technology CITIUS, which uses a combination of broadband wireless and cable TV networks. Midas recently received the CSIR Technology Award. Anand Kripalu (1980 BTEE) is appointed as MD of Cadbury India. Cadbury India has a 70-75% market share in the chocolate segment in India. Anand is presently the MD for Uniliver's East Africa region. He got a B.Tech. in Electrical Engg. from IITM in 1980 and a post-graduate degree from IIM Calcutta. He joined Unilever (then Ponds) in 1983 as a management trainee. At HLL he was a 'lister' - HLL jargon for a top official who has been identified early in his career as a potential top performer. |

Major changes to the IIT-JEE were approved by the Joint Advisory Board of the IITs on the 17th of September. The changes are intended to be implemented for JEE-2006 (April 9) and reviewed after that. The HRD Ministry has already given their consent to these reforms. The XIII Scholarship Award Function of the Class of 1972 Scholarship program was held on August 24, 2005. Ten students were awarded Scholarship Grants, with each student receiving Rs. 10,000 for the academic year. As of September 15, 2005, eleven other students were awarded the Loan Scholarships including the first girl to be supported by either scheme. |

Based on a press meeting with IITM including the Director and the Registrar, future plans for IITM campus are reported by the media. These include plans for a satellite campus to handle additional student intake, setting up an uplink facility to the EDUSAT satellite from campus, new programs in humanities area, and new programs with industrial collaboration. |

B Muthuraman (1966 BTMT), Managing Director of Tata Steel, discussed Tata Steel's expansion plans at a news conference at Jamshedpur. These plans include augmenting their steel making capacity to 33-34 million tonnes per annum by 2015 at an estimated investment of Rs. 1 trillion. Muthuraman joined TISCO in 1966 after graduating from IITM with a B.Tech. in Metallurgical Engg. While at Tata Steel, he received a PG Diploma in Business Management from XLRI, Jamshedpur. He became the Managing Director in 2001. |

Prof. V.G Idichandy (1987 PHOE) will continue as Dean for Student Affairs at IIT Madras for another one year starting from 25 July 2005. Prof. Idichandy took over as Dean for Student Affairs from Prof. SS Ghokale in 2003. He has been at IIT Madras in various positions since 1970. He is a Professor in Dept. of Ocean Engg. at IIT Madras. He obtained his MS in Applied Mechanics (1980) and his PhD in Ocean Engg. (1987), both from IITM. He has also been involved in developing web-enabled course materials. |

Dr. V Sumantran (1981 BTAE) resigned as one of the two Executive Directors at Tata Motors. He joined Tata Motors in 2001, after 15 years at General Motors. Saarang is IIT Madras' annual student organized cultural festival (old name: Mardi Gras). Saarang 2005 starts on January 21 with the a classical music show with Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash. Saarang 2005 events include a Rock Show by Moksha and Orange Street (Jan 22), and a Light Music show by Krishan Kumar Menon - Kay Kay (Jan 25). Ram Krishnan (1967 BTME) visited the campus and the hostel sector on January 2 2005 and reviewed the IITM Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) project. The technique of rainwater harvesting has now been extended to all the hostels by IITM. The residents of the hostels are now reaping the benefits. But, there is more work to be done. |
